Freight Rail: Moving More Goods on Less Fuel

Railroads Move A Ton Of Freight 473 Miles On A Single Gallon Of Fuel

From hybrids to electric cars, fuel efficiency has never been more important. And, for America’s freight railroads, that holds true. Freight rail is one of the most fuel efficient modes of freight transportation, four times more efficient than trucks. Through the development of new “green” technologies and environmentally responsible operating practices, the industry’s fuel efficiency is up 101 percent since 1980. In fact, freight trains move one ton of freight an average of 473 miles on a single gallon of fuel.
