Coal Shipment Origins

Coal dominates rail traffic in major coal-producing states like Kentucky, West Virginia and Wyoming, accounting for 83, 93 and 96 percent, respectively, of total originated rail tonnage in these states in 2012. Most coal is transported from mines in dedicated “unit trains” which are much more efficient and cost–effective, helping to keep electricity prices low for consumers.
